Fountains and Sandwich Shops: A Photo Essay of Urban and Suburban Italy by Agathe Bruyninckx

Every country has its division: suburban and urban, North and South, language divides, and cultural barriers. Italy is no exception. Yet, particular to Italy is the contrast between the foundations of classical culture and the modern wide-spanning industries of one of the world’s biggest exporters.

Italy is thus - from my own foreign perspective - defined by contrasts and antitheses: whether considering the country’s cutting-edge fashion and design against its overly conservative social backdrop, or even the fine foods against the cultural custom of covering historic city buildings in bad graffiti.

With this in mind, in Fountains and Sandwich Shops I wanted to bring the contrasted facets of my Italian experience to a standstill, through the landscapes across the city, suburbia, and the places undefinable by either of those terms.
